How to cook tasty Brown rice

Measuring cups that come in with the rice cooker can be used for measuring rice.

If measuring cups are not available or there are preferences for the amount of water, the following standard can be used.

Rice is measured in “cups” as the weighing unit. “1 cup” equals 150g or 180cc.

Usually speaking, Japanese Brown rice requires 2-3 washes. You can provide a light rub on the rice while washing. This allows the rice to better absorb the water, resulting in softer brown rice. Stir and drain off the water left in the rice after washing.

Another key to cooking rice is the amount of water. Generally speaking, brown rice require more water than white rice. You can add water as indicated by the rice cooker. A rule of thumb is 1.5 cups of water for 1 cup of rice.

✓ If one prefers the rice to be harder, less water should be added

Rice should absorb enough water before cooking, likewise for brown rice. This ensures that not only the rice will be cooked properly, it will look and taste better. The recommended soaking time for brown rice is 4-8hours for maximum for the rice to completely hydrate itself with water. Therefore, the normal practice would be to soak the rice the night before for tomorrow breakfast/lunch, or to soak it in the morning for dinner.

After that, all you have to do is to press the button to start cooking!

After the rice is done cooking, don’t open the lid just yet but leave it for 10-15 minutes, then stir it to let the water evaporate.

Finally a pot of tasty rice is ready.
