    The island of Hokkaido is located at the north end of Japan. Consequently, it has high latitude which results in an overall cold climate that is unsuitable for growing rice. However, the geographical factors are not all to the disadvantage of rice cultivation.

    The higher the latitude, the longer summer days are. That means extra time for all important process of photosynthesis, a distinct physiological advantage. Furthermore, the short, cooler nights mean less consumption of the dry matter produced by photosynthesis during the day.

    Another natural advantage that Hokkaido has to offer is in terms of water for irrigation, since it has many mountain ranges running in different directions which afford a plentiful water supply when the snow begins to melt in the spring.

    In short, the conditions in high latitude area present good possibilities for rice cultivation in Hokkaido. The only issue is to ensure that the rice is able to flourish under the cold climate.

    And this hurdle was overcame in 1980, when the delicious Kirara 397 variety which is resistant to the cold climate was born. Eventually, Hokkaido became Japan’s leading rice producing prefecture, topping rival Niigata.
